With the colder weather arriving and the holidays just around the corner, it is imperative to ensure your heating system is in good working order.
Here are some tips you should be sure to follow:
Change Filters. Furnace filters should be changed roughly every three months as a clogged filter can restrict the flow of air. This in turn will cause the unit to work harder, increase operating costs as it uses much more energy, and ultimately impact the efficiency of the system. Also, a clean filter will ensure that dust, pollen, and other small particles are not constantly being circulated inside your home, an important factor to consider especially for those who are suffering from allergies and/or asthma.
Test the Thermostat. You should be able to feel the heat coming from the air vents right away when you turn your thermostat on heat mode. A smart thermostat is highly recommended, particularly for those who are away from home often, as it will enable you to monitor and control your heating, thereby reducing your energy bills.
Check the outside AC Unit. You want to make sure that the concrete pad your unit is sitting on is unharmed and intact. The unit should be clear of any debris or leaves. If you live in an area with a lot of trees, it may be a good idea to invest in a short AC unit cover.
Check the Condensate Line. You want to make sure that your condensate line on the interior unit is clear of any build up and not clogged, as it has been working for the majority of the summer time. In order to prevent such clogs from happening, it is a good idea to pour a cup of household bleach through the line from the inside.
Take a look at your Ductwork. As your ducts carry the air from the furnace and a/c into each room of your house, it is critical to ensure that they are in good working condition and attached at both the seams and critical connection points. Ducts that leak heated air will directly impact your heating and cooling bills.
Clean the Furnace Blower. You essentially want to make sure that the area around the furnace blower is clean and clear of any debris and dust. You can do so by simply vacuuming the surrounding area.
